New data from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the United Nations specialized agency for information and communication technologies (ICTs), also reveal strong global growth in Internet use, with the estimated number of people who have used the Internet surging to 4.9 billion in 2021, from an estimated 4.1 billion in 2019. This comes as good news for global development. However, ITU data confirm that the ability to connect remains profoundly unequal. An estimated 37 per cent of the world's population – or 2.9 billion people – have still never used the Internet. Of the 2.9 billion still offline, an estimated 96 per cent live in developing countries. And even among the 4.9 billion counted as 'Internet users', many hundreds of millions may only get the chance to go online infrequently, via shared devices, or using connectivity speeds that markedly limit the usefulness of their connection. The unusually sharp rise in the number of people online suggests that measures taken during the pandemic – such as widespread lockdowns and school closures, combined with people's need for access to news, government services, health updates, e-commerce and online banking – contributed to a 'COVID connectivity boost' that has brought an estimated 782 million additional people online since 2019, an increase of 17 per cent.

A worldwide broadband pricing report from Cable.co.uk shows how much the price for internet access varies across countries. Some key takeaways:The world's cheapest fixed-line broadband is currently offered in Ukraine,  with an average monthly cost of US$6.40 per month. Five of the ten countries with the cheapest internet were formerly part of the USSR: Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Moldova and Belarus.The world's most expensive country for fixed-line broadband is Eritrea, with an average package price of $2,666 per month. Eritrea is also the most expensive country in terms of internet speed, with users paying an average monthly cost of of $1,590 per megabit per second (Mbps)—more than seven times the monthly cost per Mbps in the next most expensive country, Niger.The country with the lowest cost/speed ratio is Romania, with an average cost of $.02 per Mbps per month. Of the 211 countries covered in the report, 87 (41%) have average costs per Mbps less than $1.00 per month, and users in 171 countries (81%) pay less than $10 per Mbps per month.The US is ranked at 131st place globally among countries with the cheapest internet, with an average package cost of $60 per month. On the Mbps cost scale, though, the US is ranked at 26th place globally.

While researchers are working toward an answer to COVID-19, it seems that the average person has had enough on the topic. The declining breadth of search queries* people use to find COVID-related information on Bing points to waning interest, at least in the United States. During the week of March 16, 306,000 unique queries (explicit and implicit) related to Coronavirus or COVID-19 were recorded. By the end of April, that figure dropped to only around 36,000. Additional interesting insights from Bing searches:More general 'coronavirus' searches were replaced by 'coronavirus update' as the pandemic surged in the United States. Once the virus peaked, 'coronavirus' returned as the top search.Several queries stand out for their limited one-to-two day popularity: 'coronavirus 3d protein map', 'hilary heath dies coronavirus', 'coronavirus stimulus check deposits', 'china new coronavirus cases', 'kim jonj un coronavirus'. It's the persistent daily queries that we suspect reveal more about what people really care about: 'coronavirus symptoms', 'coronavirus map', and 'johns hopkins coronavirus dashboard'.The volume of unique searches well predated the peak of the US: people were anxious and looking for information even if the headlines from the US Government were that there was nothing to worry about. *The database includes only searches that were issued many times by multiple users from a desktop computer.

(12 November 2020) Almost 10 years ago Dr. Kyung Hee Kim, professor at The College of William & Mary, published research that examined creativity trends in the United States. The results were discouraging: "Since 1990 creative thinking has been declining among Americans of all ages, especially in kindergarten through third grade." Among the reasons Dr. Kim cited was the growth in interaction via technologies in a more impersonal way, lacking in person-to-person, verbal, and other interpersonal communicative signals.Around the same time, additional research came out showing that time once dedicated to social interactions had been eroded by electronic media use. From 1987 to 2007, daily time spent on social interactions decreased from six to just two hours per day, while electronic media usage time doubled from four to eight hours per day, according research published by Dr. Aric Sigman. No doubt, today this difference has increased even more, since children in their earliest years learn to slide their little fingers across gadget screens. You might wonder why we are featuring 10-year old data at Knoema. The answer: The COVID-19 pandemic. We're living through a period of dramatic decline in the intensity of social person-to-person interactions. And while employers to universities may have turned to remote work and learning as a lifeline, no one is sure what will be the new norm for remote engagement. And, we wonder, will a strong shift to remote format be the creative thing to do? At the same time, the use of the Internet is gradually growing in developing countries. Despite the fact that Africa and Asia still have the lowest rates of network connections, these regions seem to be the fastest growing by number of internet users. The lowest growth rates are recorded in Europe and the Americas regions. Registrations have grown by 32.4 million, or 11 percent, year over year. Total country-code TLD (ccTLD) registrations were 148.2 million domain names, a 2.6 percent increase quarter over quarter, and a 8.2 percent increase year over year. The .com and .net TLDs experienced aggregate growth, reaching a combined total of approximately 142.5 million domain names in the domain name base in the first quarter of 2016. This represents a 7.1 percent increase year over year. As of March 31, 2016, the base of registered names in .com equaled 126.6 million names, while .net equaled 15.9 million names. New .com and .net registrations totaled 10 million during the first quarter of 2016. In the first quarter of 2015, new .com and .net registrations totaled 8.7 million. The average sale price for the top 10 .com domain names reported by DN Journal as sold in the aftermarket in Q1 2016 is $315,800.

Akamai’s globally-distributed Intelligent Platform provides data on many metrics, namely: connection speeds, attack traffic, network connectivity/availability leading Web properties and digital media providers. Quarterly Akamai publishes the State of the Internet/Security Report based on this data.Internet Connectivity: During the first quarter of 2017, Akamai observed attack traffic originating from source IP addresses in 239 unique countries/regions, it is 0.9% increase from the number seen in the fourth quarter of 2016.Attack Traffic: In the fourth quarter of 2014, China was in the top slot, growing to 41% of observed attack traffic. Indonesia saw a significant increase in observed attack traffic, more than doubling to 15%, while the United States increased nominally to 13%.Internet and Broadband Adoption: Looking at connection speeds, the global average connection speed grew 15% to 7,2 Mbps. At a country/region level, South Korea continued to have the highest average connection speed at 28.6 Mbps but Singapour had the highest average peak connection speed at 109 Mbps. 4 Mbps broadband adoption has grown globally in the first quarter to 82% up 3,3% from the previous quarter. As it has for many quarters, leading positions takes South Korea in all three broadband tiers with adoption rates of 85%, 69%, and 40% respectively, after quarterly increases of 3.1%, 7.8%, and 16%.

In early 2015, the Google Play Market became the largest mobile application platform, surpassing Apple App Store by number of available applications. The Google Play Store currently offers 2,127,612 Android apps. The 2 million milestone was reached in March, 2.5 years after passing the 1 million threshold in July 2013. In April, 58,467 new apps were released in the official Google app store, although the monthly average is closer to 40,000 new apps.  Android Market, the former name for Google Play, was initially launched in October 2008 as a platform for the distribution of mobile apps. Later, in March 2012, it was merged with two other services - Google Music and Google eBookstore - and renamed Google Play. Through the merger, Google Play has expanded the applications offered to include a wide range of digital media including books, magazines, music, movies and TV programs. The most popular apps are games, which account for about 41 percent of all new Android app installs. Roughly 90 percent, or 1.9 million, of the Google Play apps are available free of charge. These apps lead revenue generation based on in-app purchases that are made subsequent to the initial free download. Despite Google Play's leading position by number of applications available, substantial effort is still needed to make it the best place for developers. According to estimates by Forbes, Google pays developers about $900 million each year. Given that there are nearly 150,000 developers distributing their apps through Google Play, it appears that the average revenue per developer is about $6,000, which is three times lower than Apple's App Store pay-outs to developers. Expanding monetization opportunities and reducing the number of low quality applications - which currently constitute about 12 percent of apps, according to the AppBrain low quality app detection filter - seem to be the two high-priority directions for development. Growth in the number, quality and diversity of mobile apps comes not only from competition for users between the likes of Google Play and the App Store but also from expanding use of mobile devices and mobile internet. From this perspective, global trends favor robust app growth and diversification. About 47 percent of the world's population, or 3.5 billion people, use mobile broadband with the penetration rate ranging from 17 percent in Africa to 78 percent in Europe. At the same time, the relative cost of mobile broadband Internet service is continuously declining: as of 2013, monthly subscription charges accounted for 0.11 percent of per capita monthly income on average.

The total number of registered domain names on the Web reached 326.4 million in the first quarter of 2016, according to the latest Domain Name Industry Brief by Verisign, a US-based domain name and Internet security company. That represents an estimated 12.4 million new domains registered since the fourth quarter of 2015 (3.8% growth) and nearly 32 million since the first quarter of 2015 (11% growth). The combined new URL registrations during the first quarter with a .com or .net extension were about 10 million, followed by extensions unique to a specific country—country code top-level domains, or ccTLDs—which made up another 3.8 million new registrations.The .com extension is the world's most popular and had a base population of 126.6 million registrations as of March 2016. The .net extension is far less used with about 15.9 million registered URLs.The ccTLD extensions together represent another 148.2 million registered URLs. The domain name industry, however, includes not only new registrations but also the exchange of previously registered domains, which is commonly referred to as the domain aftermarket. This secondary market for internet domain names has grown substantially in recent years since an increasing number of generic domain names with "desirability" and "marketing appeal" potential have already been registered by resellers or domain warehouses. DN Journal (DNJ)—the domain industry's premier trade magazine—reports weekly on the highest domain sales on the aftermarket, with the data broken out by sales venue. Analysis of recent reports indicates the following:The average sale price for the top 10 .com domain in the aftermarket so far during 2016 is $315,800. The most expensive domain purchase so far this year was the we.com transaction for $8 million. The sales of the jade.com and LA.com domains this year run a distant second and third by value at $1.25 million and $1.2 million, respectively. The $13 million sale of sex.com in 2010 tops the charts in the aftermarket sales tracked by the DNJ and is one of many sex industry URLs to rank in the annual top 10 lists by sales value. The sex.com domain name was sold by Escom LLC, which had gone bankrupt, to Clover Holdings. Other sex-industry domains, like porn.com and porno.com, have been sold in the range of $8-10 million. Currently in the United States 78 percent of the total population aged 12+ uses social media sites, which corresponds to about 165 million Americans. Facebook is the most visited social media site, accounting for 43 percent of all US visits. The second most popular social media site is the global video-sharing service YouTube with 22 percent of visits. Together YouTube and Facebook dominate two thirds of the American social media traffic. Reddit, Twitter and Instagram are the next most popular with 5.5, 4.9 and 1.7 percent of visits, respectively. Launched in February 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook quickly gained popularity and transformed from a humble university network to what is now a global social media giant with more than 1.6 billion active users. In June 2009, five years after Facebook launched, it replaced MySpace as the most visited social media platform in the United States. Since then, MySpace has continuously lost market share: in March 2010, YouTube moved up to number two; in May 2011, Twitter and Yahoo! Answers surpassed it; and by July 2012 MySpace fell out of the top-10 with only 0.39 percent of visits. One of the main reasons for MySpace's decline was its aggressive monetization strategy that ran counter to user experience. Heavily advertised site space made it difficult to use, inflexible, and slow while rival Facebook offered users a clean and light site design. Yet, instead of resetting itself to improve its social-networking environment, in-house built MySpace applications and features remained shallow and often buggy unlike Facebook applications created mostly by outside developers. In today's Viz of the Day we present a unique interactive visualization designed on the basis of Akamai Q2 2015 State of the Internet Report, which shows the main trends in the average and peak internet connection speeds across various countries during the 5-year period from Q1 2010 to Q2 2015.  The dashboard clearly shows that the average connection speed has increased significantly during the previous five years in all countries, reaching a world average of 5.1 megabits per second (Mbps) in Q2 2015. South Korea leads the ranking with average connection speed of 23.1 Mbps. That is almost 36 percent higher than in Hong Kong, which is ranked second, and more than twice as high as the United States. Peak connection speed around the world also demonstrated considerable growth. Google reports that in the second half of 2012 company got 21 389 user data requests from federal agencies and governments from all over the world. Almost 40% of all requests comes from the U.S. authorities. In case of the U.S. authorities, Google provides some information for 90-80% of user data requests. Singapore, Taiwan and United Kingdom get some information from Google in 70-75% of requests. Russia, Turkey, Irland and Hungary have vary low chances to obtain requested information from Google.
