(12 May 2021) In 2020, worldwide motor vehicle production fell sharply, dropping 15.4% from the previous year, because of travel restriction measures and an overall decline in economic activity due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Passenger cars experienced a more significant drop in production than commercial vehicles, with decreases of 16.9% and 11.6%, respectively. This marks the third consecutive year with negative growth in global automotive vehicle production. In contrast, global electric vehicle (EV) sales increased 39% in 2020, to 3.2 million units, boosting the total global EV stock to 11.3 million units.The latest statistics from the International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers reveal a major decline in production across all manufacturing regions, with the most significant decreases in Latin America (24.8%), Western Europe (24%), and North America (20.3%).Vehicle sales data show a similar story, with 2020 passenger cars sales registering a year-on-year 15.9% drop and commercial vehicle sales dropping a less devastating 8.7%. In some world regions, passenger car sales decreased by more than 20% from 2019 levels; these include Latin America (down 29.3%), the NAFTA region (28.9%), Africa (24.7%), and Western Europe (21.1%).Export trade also suffered a blow from 2020 coronavirus restrictions aiming to slow down the virus's spread. Motor vehicle exports came to an almost complete standstill in Eastern Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East, where yearly vehicle export totals were more than 97% below their 2019 levels. Other regions experienced export decreases of 40–50%.Against the backdrop of an overall motor vehicle market contraction in 2020, exports and sales in the global EV market registered lucrative growth. Global EV sales have accelerated by 39% in comparison to 2019, while EV export trade increased by 18%. Germany now ranks second in EV sales, after China, overtaking the United States in 2020. Norway was the top country by electric vehicle sales share, with 75% of cars sold in the country being electric, followed by Sweden (32%), Netherlands (25%), and Denmark (16%).

(29 March 2021) Poor weather conditions and lack of visibility resulted in a giant 200,000-ton container ship, Ever Given, blocking the Suez Canal for almost a week, from Tuesday, March 23 to Monday, March 29. Since the Suez Canal is the most important trade route connecting Europe and North America in the North and the Middle East and Asia in the South, the blockage halted a significant proportion of global trade until the ship's eventual release early this morning.The annual cargo shipped through the Suez Canal in both directions accounts for around 9%, by weight, of global seaborne trade, and more than 7%* of all global trade. The highest economic damage from blockage of the Suez Canal falls on Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Netherlands, China and Egypt—countries whose trade turnover through the canal exceeds 100 thousand tons per year.According to the Suez Canal Authority Annual Report, a total of 107 million tons of crude oil (equivalent to 2.2 million barrels/day or 5% of world crude exports) and 53 million tons of cereals (12% of global cereals trade) went through the Suez Canal in 2019.  *Estimates based on data for 2019.

(18 June 2020) Industry experts predict that the aviation industry's recovery from the coronavirus outbreak will be long and slow. According to estimates from Boeing Co. Chief Executive David Calhoun, air traffic may not bounce back for two or three years. Air flights are a major factor in the spread of the coronavirus across globe and within countries. Today the third global wave of the COVID-19 pandemic significantly restrains the recovery of flight traffic.By June 17 the number of commercial flights globally was down 56 percent compared to the pre crisis period and total flights, including military, ambulance, government, and some other types of flights, were 32 percent lower.While stock markets have almost recovered to their pre crisis level, share prices of the largest airlines and aircraft manufacturers are still 20-60 percent below pre crisis peaks. Aircraft manufacturers with heavy military sector orientations, such as Lockheed Martin and BAE Systems, have outperformed others in the industry and returned to nearly pre crisis levels.

After international borders were closed and countries locked down to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, passenger demand for air travel vanished, incurring billions of dollars in losses for the aviation industry.According to a recent outlook from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the global aviation industry will lose $100 billion of net profit in 2020 and 2021. On average, every day of 2020 will add $230 million to industry losses. Recovery of the aviation industry is expected to be a long one, particularly because of the industry's increased debt burden. After a decade of profits, debt levels were relatively low ($430 billion, or roughly half annual revenues). Vital financial relief measures by governments have kept airlines from going bankrupt so far but have ballooned debt by $120 billion to $550 billion, which is about 131 percent of expected revenues in 2020.Passenger load factor is expected to decline to 62.7 percent in 2020. According to IATA estimates based on sample of 122 airlines, only four airlines in the sample could break even at load factors below 62 percent. The remaining 118 airlines would, with their current pricing policies, would be in the red.

Apple's Mobility Trend indicators are available at national and subnational levels and are derived from requests for directions in its Apple Maps app.According to Apple's mobility data, driving and walking in the world's largest economies plummeted between 50% and 90% globally compared to the pre-COVID period (baseline is January 13, 2020).Mobility in Northern European countries, including Finland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark, as well as in Taiwan has decreased much less than in other regions.Mobility trends point to an initial, albeit weak, recovery in driving and walking activity in the last 3 weeks.

As stated in the ITF Transport Outlook 2013, published by International Transport Forum, at the current stage of global economic development value chains based on reliable and relatively low-cost transport networks are key to sustainable economic growth. That is why, it could be said, that transportation contributes to economic growth, first of all, by boosting inbound and international trade flows through roads, railways, air and marine routes. Moreover, transportation enhances human mobility by way of private and public passenger transport as well as transport infrastructure making it more easily for people to communicate with each other. Nevertheless, transport exploitation is in part responsible for air pollution, as it causes significant CO2 and greenhouse gases emissions in the atmosphere, which in the end lead to climate change. For this reason, the major challenge for policymakers attempting to develop strategic transportation plans is to trade-off between benefits and drawbacks of transport evolution. Thus, for instance, rapid urban sprawl coupled with growth of ageing population on the one side and the development of public transport on the other side could well help to reduce CO2 emissions by reducing number of vehicle-kilometers traveled by private vehicles at the same time not hampering overall mobility of the passengers. Such long-term strategic planning is only possible if there are evidence-based insights on transport development which, in turn, are based on reliable statistics, analysis and research. (20 May 2020)  In recent weeks, drivers have returned to the roads across the United States as states have increasingly relaxed social distancing guidelines. As of the week starting May 11, driving activity measured as the number of miles per commuter topped the pre COVID-19 peak (different for each state) for two US states, and in 14 US states driving activity increased to 80% or more of the pre-COVID driving levels, according to Nexar.It's some of the hardest hit US states, including New York, New Mexico and Nebraska, where driving activity continues to stay relatively subdued.Driving activity in most of the largest US cities has also not fully recovered, which tells us that rural areas and small cities are relaxing lockdown measures faster compared to large urban centers. According to Nexar Driver Trends statistics, however, driving activity in about a dozen large US cities will rebound in the next 3-4 weeks.

From time to time we hear messages about space vehicles launches and sometimes about unsuccessful attempts. The former and especially the latter ones are widely broadcasted trough the TV and the Internet, being an exciting show for the viewers. We present not less exciting statistics on space launches on the underlying charts and tables. As you can see from the first chart, the total number of space launches decreased slightly in 2012 compared to 2011 breaking general upward tendency which has been lasting for the previous 9 years. The same picture is on the successful attempts: their share in the total number of launches in 2012 kept on falling since 2010. However, 2013 has become the most successful year of the last decade. Over the last 15 years, Russia has undertaken 395 space launches, becoming the top country in the world ranking by the number of space launches. Nevertheless, with 23 failures out of 395 attempts, Russia keeps the fifth position in the world ranking by success rate, passing forward Japan, French Guinea, China, and United States.

The surge in popularity of sport utlity vehicles in the US has come at a cost, with SUVs overtaking sedans in fatal pedestrian accidents. Experts attribute the higher profile of the front of SUVs—the collision point in most pedestrian collisions—as leading to a higher death rate compared to lower profile sedans.  Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reveals that light trucks—including SUVs, minivans, and pickup trucks—now account for 42.2 percent of pedestrian fatalities in the United States.Almost 6,000 pedestrians were killed in accidents related to road traffic on or along US roads in 2016 alone, which is 1.85 fatalities per 100,000 people and an increase from 1.3 fatalities per 100,000 in 2009.On a state-by-state basis, California, Texas, and Florida reported the highest total number of fatalities in 2016, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. On a per capita basis, Florida and New Mexico had the highest rates. General traffic fatalities have been on a clear downward trend in the United States since 1990, with some deviation depending on the user group in question. Accidents among cyclists, motorcyclists, and pedestrians increased between 2010 and 2015, whereas the number of moped users killed in road accidents decreased during the same period, according to the International Transport Forum. Scanning the globe, the United States was the absolute leader in road fatalities in 2016, according to the International Transport Forum. Almost 28,000 people died in US traffic accidents, a rate twice that of South Africa, the country with the second highest rate.The US ranks ninth globally following countries including South Africa, Malaysia, and Uruguay, based on fatalities per 100,000 people. The increased popularity of SUVs among Americans suggests that communities and governments will have to work together to reduce the risk to pedestrians.Pedestrian safety advocates are promoting combined enforcement efforts targeted at driver behavior, lowered speed limits, and training for cab drivers, for example. Some cities have aggressively implemented measures to increase pedestrian safety as well, including reducing roads from four to three lanes, adding lighted bicycle traffic signals, and increasing enforcement, among other measures.

Sharp differences exist, however, among European countries. As of 2011, Germany had the second largest aircraft fleet in Europe and, at the same time, the oldest fleet. Twenty percent of the country's aircrafts were more than 20 years old, an increase from 17 percent of the fleet in 2010. The number of new aircraft in the fleet also grew from 2010 to 2011 but at a lower rate.In contrast, the same year Turkey became the top country by new aircraft growth after adding 18 new aircraft to its fleet. The United States is often criticized for its perceived nonchalance toward air pollution despite persistent statements to the contrary by the current presidential administration. The US remains the number one contributor globally to harmful chemicals in the air, with the fossil-fuel consuming transportation industry being a primary emission source. With more than 250 million vehicles on US roads, the US surpasses even China based on total vehicles in use despite China's much larger population...at least for now. China has already surpassed the US in annual new car sales. Examining the data on a per capita basis reveals another side to the story. The US is ranked a surprising 36th globally in terms of passenger cars on the road per 1,000 people. Other Western countries with more passenger cars per capita than the US include the likes of New Zealand, Canada, Italy, Australia, Germany, and the UK, each with more than 500 passenger cars on the road per 1,000 people compared to 379 vehicles per 1,000 people in the US. Even as the design of cars become increasingly safety focused and even automated, speed, texting, and driving while under the influence contribute to a rising number of deaths from motor vehicle crashes, particularly in the United States. Asian car manufacturers nearly swept the 2016 motor vehicle safety rankings by the US Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), securing nine of the top 10 spots. Only Daimler's (Germany) Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class joined Toyota, Hyundai, Subaru, and Honda in the top 10. The IIHS testing of new cars in the North American market covered three safety components:Crashworthiness, a measure of how well a vehicle protects its occupants in a crash;Crash prevention and mitigation, including all systems that warn a driver or introduce automatic breaking to avoid or mitigate a frontal collision;Child seat anchors, which assesses the usability of child seat attachment hardware. This year’s crashworthiness tests were distinctive from years past because of new, more stringent regulations related to vehicles’ front optics performance. The IIHS test is the world's first official rating of reliability and quality of the front headlights based on how well a particular vehicle illuminates the road at night and the degree to which short-range headlights "blind" oncoming drivers.A slim majority (52.4%) of cars tested received poor or marginal ratings. Only seven models earned top scores; namely, Chevy Volt, Honda Ridgeline, Hyundai Elantra and Santa Fe, Subaru Legacy, Toyota Prius V, and Volvo XC60. Car safety features and overall design along with traffic speed and the use of seatbelts are considered central factors in the number of traffic deaths worldwide. According to a 2008 estimate from the World Health Organization, 1.2 million people died globally in motor vehicle crashes. North America, Western Europe, and Australia have the safest roads, with the total number of traffic deaths ranging from 2.7 to 12 deaths per 100,000 people.As manufacturers have enhanced car safety features, countries have reported persistently declining numbers of deaths from road accidents over the last decade, according to the International Transport Forum.In most countries, the maximum permitted speed in urban areas does not exceed 60 km/h (about 37 mph) and the majority of people use seatbelts while driving.Despite a relatively low number of traffic deaths compared to peers globally, US regulators and the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have reportedly taken note of the 14 percent increase in the number of motor vehicle deaths in the US since 2014 and are exploring potential underlying causes and the role that new technology—including autonomous vehicle technology—could play in reversing the trend. Methodology note: IIHS simplified its estimation methodology to more clearly distinguish among the tested vehicles on the basis of numerical values, replacing letter grades, and to shift to a numerical overall rating. The Institute now uses a 4-point grading scale—poor (1), marginal (2), acceptable (3), and good (4)—for crashworthiness, crash avoidance and mitigation, and child seat anchors. To appraise front crash prevention, the Institute uses a 3-level scale: basic (1-2), advanced (2-3), and superior (4-6). A car receives a crash prevention score of zero if a feature is not available for testing.

Some countries are famous for the quality of their roads (and maybe also the speeds you may go on them). According to the Global Competitiveness Report, the UAE boasts the best roads. France, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, and Switzerland also have very high-quality roads—with a ‘quality of roads' score higher than 6—and yet none make the top 100 countries by land area and thus all fall outside the group of countries with the largest road networks. If large countries with expansive road networks struggle to maintain high-quality roads, to what extent is the public maintenance of roadways hampered by corruption? We analyzed data for seven countries, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, India, Russia, and the United States, which combined account for 70 percent of the global roads network and roughly half of the world's land area.Four of the seven countries have high road quality, scoring a 5 or greater on the 'quality of roads' subindex of the Global Competitiveness Index in 2017. This means that the length and quality of road network are not correlated. In fact, the data shows there is a slight positive relationship between road quality and length. All seven countries also have different densities of roadways, which is reasonable given challenging topographies and climate conditions and potentially insufficient investment in infrastructure. But, again, investment issues could relate to corruption. So, what about corruption and roadways? The data is absolutely inconclusive.Brazil and Russia score high on corruption and low on density and quality of roads, whereas corruption in China hasn’t lessened the quality or density of its roadways.The US scores low on corruption but has relatively high density and quality of roads whereas others with low corruption scores—such as Australia and Canada—have low densities of roadways.And, then there’s India as the outlier in the group of seven, with a relatively high corruption score and high density and poor quality of roadways.

Information that EU member states submit annually per Regulation (EC) No 443/2009 to the European Commission and onward to the European Environment Agency (EEA) on newly registered passenger cars provide a unique opportunity to analyze CO2 emissions. The data reveal thought-provoking trends from the perspective of purchasing patterns of lowest to highest emission cars and the corresponding potential contribution of each make and model to air pollution.Premium-class sport cars are the ‘dirtiest’ based on CO2 emissions, with Bugatti vehicles—each emitting more than half a kilogram of CO2 per kilometer (km)—at the top. Yet, the potential contribution of these cars to the climate change is restrained by the limited number on the roads. Member countries reported a total of only five Bugatti new car registrations during 2015. Likewise, only one Pagani, the second dirtiest car in the class, was registered last year.In contrast, cars with relatively low CO2 emissions are, as a rule, more popular and consequently pollute more air in total. For example, while Ford cars are among the ten ‘cleanest’ cars—emitting around 100 grams of CO2 per km—with more than 1 million new Ford cars registered in Europe last year, the contribution from this make to atmospheric pollution is far more significant than that of Ferrari, the most popular premium-class sport car.Excluding electric cars, hybrid cars, such as the BMW I (23g of CO2 per km), Fisker (53g of CO2 per km) and Smart (93g of CO2 per km), have the lowest CO2 emissions among passenger vehicles. However, just as too few of the dirtiest premium-class sport cars are registered each year to dramatically contribute to air pollution, too few of the cleanest cars are purchased to combat climate change. At least, for now. The EEA data also reveal interesting differences among the EU member countries. Germany recorded the highest average CO2 emissions per new passenger car registered in 2015. Residents of other North-East countries such as Poland, Latvia and Estonia showed similar car buying preferences. Residents of South-West Europe, stretching from Portugal to Malta to Greece and even Croatia, knowingly or not, tended toward cleaner cars.

On an average Airbus continues to dominate the commercial air carrier segment of Europe,  as per the 2012 statistics. In the passenger space, Airbus tops the list followed by Boeing and Embraer. However, Boeing maintains a clear lead in the cargo space, over other aircraft manufactures.  Fresh purchase of A380 model of Airbus and 787 Dreamliner of Boeing by Emirates and Ethiad Airways is expected to boost the order books of both these manufactures. Boeing led the order book race in the current Dubai air show,when Dubai-based Emirates airline placed an order for 150 of Boeing's new 777 mini-jumbo crafts. Emirates has also ordered new 50 Airbus A380.  Airbus A380 is the largest passenger aircraft in the world, with a seating capacity of over 850 passengers per flight.

India is considered to be the country with the lowest cost of travelling by air. Average price to travel 100 km by plane in this country is $10.4. Noteworthy that India is one of two countries - the second is United States - where travelling by air is cheaper than travelling by train: in both countries the difference is about 5 dollars. On the opposite side of the ranking traditionally expensive European countries are located with Finland at the top: one hundred kilometers flight in this country costs in average $139. Concerning cost of railroad trip, South Africa is the cheapest country followed by Georgia and Egypt. The latter, in turn, is the country with the lowest price for 100km bus trip which constitutes a bit less than $2: so, bus trip through the whole country from west to east will cost 20 dollars. While bus, as a rule, is considered to be comparatively cheap transport mode, in some countries it is even more expensive than plane. The examples of such countries are Netherlands and Australia. Thus, in Netherlands flight is cheaper than bus travel by 4 dollars, while in Australia the difference is bigger by 50 cents. All in all, average cost of transportation by all three modes is the lowest in South Africa, Albania, Malaysia and Thailand and the highest in Switzerland, Austria, Belgium and Israel.
